Delimitation to the rescue

Corporators to escape public ire in undeveloped wards
Hyderabad: More than 70 Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation corporators might escape crushing defeats in the upcoming municipal elections thanks to the delimitation of wards.
Several corporators have yet not utilised the funds recently allotted by the GHMC for development works. The civic body had allocated Rs 50 lakh for this purpose.
But now, with new wards to be created (50 wards will be added to the existing 150 wards), the present corporators will not have to face public ire as the undeveloped wards will have new faces contesting the polls.
Some of the largest wards (area wise) under the GHMC are Alwal, Patancheru, Uppal, Jeedimetla, Ramanthapur, Hyderanagar, Motinagar, Kukatpally, Yakatpura and Vivekanandanagar.
These wards also have the highest Backward Caste population (12,000-15,000 in each ward). The total population in these wards is around 90,000 to 1 lakh while it should not be more than 50,000 as per the High Court order.
The major works in every ward in the core areas are mainly road repairs or building new roads. Crucial works in the peripheral areas of the city are laying and maintenance of sewerage and water pipelines.
Corporators, meanwhile, not only blame the civic body for releasing the funds late, but also for less funds.
“Firstly, the wards are huge and the population is not less than 70,000. How can Rs 1 crore, annually, be sufficient for such a large population and growing colonies? The GHMC allots the same amount of funds for all the wards, irrespective of the area.
A ward with a population of 25,000 and the one with a population of 1 lakh gets the same funds. In peripheral areas, the corporators have to install and maintain sewerage and pipelines. How is it possible with this amount?” asked Telugu Desam floor leader Singi Reddy Srinivas Reddy.
