Thanjavur: Two welders from Thanjavur district were killed in an accident at their workplace in a sugar plant in Ethiopia on Saturday, according to information reaching here. Their kin have sought the help of the district administration to fly back the bodies for the last rites.
The distraught families of Muthukrishnan, 41, of Andakudi and Muruganandam, 26, of Veerancheri near here petitioned Thanjavur district collector Dr N Subbaiyan on Saturday and submitted petitions seeking help to get their bodies for last rites in their native places.
They said Muthukrishnan and Muruganandam were trained welders and had gone to work in a sugar factory in Ethiopia in Africa about 18 months ago. They were killed in an accident in the factory on Saturday and the families received the bad news the same day. The government should help them in flying the bodies back home, they told the collector.
Collector Subbaiyan told DC that through the state headquarters, he had sent a communication to the Indian embassy in Ethiopia seeking assistance to fly the bodies to Chennai at the earliest. The bodies would be brought to their native places by road from the Chennai airport, he said.
