Rich pensioners pose dilemma

Officials confused as people living in pucca houses too claim benefits
Khammam: Officials verifying applications for food security cards, pensions and certificates under FAST are in a dilemma whether to give the thumbs up to some applicants who live in buildings sanctioned by the government. While the state government’s instructions are clear not to sanction food security cards and pensions to people who own pucca buildings and cars some of the applicants live in houses sanctioned under the Indiramma housing scheme.
These families claim that they are still below the poverty line and have taken loans to pay their share for the building.Interestingly, many of these families have expanded the two-room dwelling into four room houses and others in the villages treat them as owners of classy buildings. P. Janardhana Rao, a surveyor in Mudigonda mandal, said that all members such families are agricultural labourers.
“These families have no other property except the Indiramma house, which was sanctioned under weaker section housing programme. We are in a flux whether to sanction pension to the elderly in these families or not,” he said. Officials have encountered several such instances during their survey. In some cases, the financial status of the kids in the family is quite good, with some even owning cars.
However, the parents have applied for pensions claiming that they have no income or assets of their own. N. Dhanajay, another surveyor said that they would report whatever they observed during the survey and let the tahsildars take the final decision.
