Stadiums across Kerala get ready for 35th National Games

12,000 athletes and sports officials and more than 6,000 facilitators to attend the mega sports fete
Thiruvananthapuram: The countdown for the National Games has begun with just 100 days remaining for the sports event which will be held at 31 venues in seven districts. Over 12,000 athletes and sports officials and more than 6,000 facilitators will attend the 35th National Games to be held from January 31 to February 14.
Most of the stadia are ready, while work is progressing at some and others are getting finishing touches.
The status reports of various venues are as follows.
Medical College ground, Kozhikode: The ground will host the men’s football competitions, cost Rs 15 crore. A new synthetic athletic track laid, the first in the Malabar region.
Aquatics complex, Pirapancode and Thiruvananthapuram: Fully renovated, cost Rs 6.4 crore. Owned by Kerala State Sports Council.
Squash court, Thiruvananthapuram: Coming up near Chandrasekharan Nair stadium, cost Rs 5.50 crore.
Sreepadam stadium, Attingal, Thiruvananthapuram: Hosts kho-kho and kabaddi matches, cost Rs 7.18 crore.
Jimmy George indoor stadium, Thiruvananthapuram: Located at the Kerala Water Authority complex, Vellayambalam, owned by the Directorate of Sports, Kerala, cost Rs 11.6 crore, hosts the gymnastic and hand ball events.
Rajiv Gandhi indoor stadium, Kadavanthra, Ernakulam: Hosts table tennis and shuttle badminton, managed by Regional Sport Centre, cost Rs 10.23 crore.
Thriprayar indoor stadium, Thrissur: Owned by the Thriprayar Sports and Games Association, first of its kind in a rural area, cost Rs 1.08 crore. Hosts boxing.
VKN Menon indoor stadium, Thrissur: Owned by the District Sports Council, Thrissur, an additional three-storied building, stadium renovated by laying new maple wood flooring, cost Rs 7.36 crore. Hosts weightlifting and judo competitions.
VKK Menon indoor stadium, Kozhikode: Renovated by laying new maple wood flooring, air conditioning and intense arena lighting, cost Rs 6.53 crore, owned by the District Sports Council. Hosts Volleyball matches.
Agriculture College indoor stadium, Thiruvananthapuram: Hosts taekwondo and netball competitions, Kerala State Construction Corporation completes renovation work, costs Rs 2.76 crore.
Lal Bahadur Shastri corporation stadium, Kollam: Hosts rugby sevens matches, cost Rs 6.89 crore.
Indoor stadium, Kannur: Wrestling and basketball events, completed at a cost of Rs 30 crore.
CIAL golf course, Ernakulam: Cost Rs 1.08 crore.
University stadium: cost Rs 10 crore, floodlit. Hosts athletics competitions.
Chandrasekharan Nair stadium: Owned by Kerala Police Sports and Youth Welfare Society, Thiruvananthapuram: Games secretariat functions here, practice ground for the athletes coming up, cost Rs 8 crore.
