KVS policy on 99-yr lease dashes Kerala hope on KVs

Currently there are 37 KVs in Kerala
Kochi: It would take some time before the new Kendriya Vidyalayas would be set up in the State, including the sanctioned ones in Ernakulum and Kottayam districts. The reason, the new policy of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) will grant permission only in such cases where the land is leased out in the name of the KVS, for a period of 99 years, unlike the nod given for functioning of new schools out of temporary buildings.
Earlier, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the opening of 54 new Kendriya Vidyalas (KVs), including in Thrikkakkara (Ernakulum) and Kaduthuruthy (Kottayam).
“The Commissioner made it clear that now the permission won’t be granted to function out of temporary buildings. In these cases, the respective district administration is yet to locate suitable
land and lease it out to the KVS. They won’t be coming up in near time,” said a senior officer of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Kochi regional office.
Last year, the then Ernakulum Collector, Sheik Pareeth, had announced that the new Kendriya Vidyalaya in the district would function out of the Trikkakkara Municipal LP School for the “time being”.
“A total of 10 classrooms in the school will be
given to the Kendriya Vidyalaya, from next
academic year (2014-15) onwards. The temporary arrangement will be till the buildings and other infrastructure of the KV is completed at the land allotted in Irumbanam,” Pareeth had said then.
However the KVS officer said the land identified at Irumpanam is now out of consideration as a high tension wire passes through the site.
“Similarly, the politicians in the Kottayam region are not showing sustained interest to identify land,” he said.
Apart from the two, requests are pending with the KVS to open schools at Mattannur (Kannur), Nileshwar (Kasargod), Konni (Pathanamthitta), Ambalamedu (Chalakudy) and Erumapatty Grama Pachayat (Waddakkuncherry, Thrissur). Currently there are 37 KVs in Kerala functioning under the KVS regional office at Ernakulum catering to 50, 000 students and around 1500 employees.
