CCI fails to start cotton purchase

Officials refused to pay an MSP of Rs 4,050 for cotton
Adilabad: Cotton purchase by the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) has not begun on the first day on Mondy as scheduled at Adilabad market yard as the CCI officials refused to pay an MSP of Rs4,050 for cotton with more than the permissible 12 per cent moisture. The CCI did no business on the first day of cotton purchase.
Irked over the development, farmers staged a rasta roko at the market yard till evening. In information, collector M. Jagan Mohan went to Adilabad market yard late in the evening to resolve the problem but in vain.
Later, the farmers also stalled traffic at Kisan Chowk in Adilabad by placing bullock carts loaded with cotton produce. The farmers demanded that the CCI should purchase cotton at MSP without taking the moisture content into consideration. The CCI officials said they would deduct Rs40 for every one per cent extra moisture content from the MSP.
The irate farmers even forced closure of shops in the area. Soon police entered the scene and pacified the farmers. Rythu Sangham leaders said CCI, in collusion with traders, was trying to reduce the MSP.

Tense situation prevailed at Adilabad market yard on Monday when irate farmers confined collector M. Jagan Mohan in a weigh bridge room, as he reached the place around 6.30 p.m. to resolve their complaints against the CCI officials. The farmers did not allow him to come out of the room and leave the place. They did not even allow his vehicle to reach near the weigh bridge room. Police too remained mute spectators and waited outside the room as the farmers were very angry.
