Police issue do’s and don’ts for safe festival

Police said crackers can be burst between 6am and 10 pm
Chennai: With Deepavali only two days away and the city moving into the festive mood despite heavy rains, the Chennai city police have issued guidelines for safe celebrations.
The city police, quoting a Supreme Court order, said crackers can be burst only between 6 am and 10 pm and no firecrackers of more than 125 decibels should be manufactured or sold.
The police further say not to bursting crackers near articles which are easily prone to fire and to avoid bursting them near bikes, scooters and places where petroleum products are sold.
The police asked the people not to throw lighted firecrackers in a negligent manner as it may cause accidents.
Do not burst crackers after covering it with tin boxes as it may lead to serious explosions, added the police press release.
The statement says that firing of rockets near huts or multi-storeyed flats was completely banned and also no smoking near shops selling firecrackers. The firecracker shop-keepers or licencees of firecracker stalls were asked not to use chimneys, candles or petromax lights in the shop premises.
“Do not burst crackers near cattle as they may run in fear which could cause serious accidents to pedestrians and motorists. Further, parents and teachers have been asked to explain the seriousness of fire accidents that crackers could cause,” the police said.
