Why Jayalalithaa was not released on Friday

Jayalalithaa was not released because several legal procedures could not be completed

BENGALURU: Despite the SC granting bail, former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was not released on Friday as several legal procedures could not be completed within the official court working hours.

According to the procedure, the order copy of bail granted by any higher court has to reach the lower court, which heard the case. The lower court judge will go through the higher court order and grant the release order addressed to the jail superintendent, directing him to release the undertrial or convict.

The advocates have to take the release order to the prison and produce it before the prison officials, who will release the inmates after the bail conditions are fulfilled.

It is said that Ms Jayalalithaa’s advocates reached the city only around 6 pm. The court resumes work at 11 am on Saturday, and Ms Jayalalithaa and her aides are expected to be released between 1 pm and 2 pm.
