New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday told top commanders of the armed forces that “full-scale wars may become rare” in future but “force will remain an instrument of deterrence and influencing behaviour.”
The PM, addressing a meeting of the Combined Commanders’ Conference in the capital that included the three Service chiefs and other top-ranking officers of the three services, also pointed out that “control of space may become as critical as that of land, air and sea”.
Top sources said the government had decided to focus on upgrading the technological capabilities of the armed forces in a big way “instead of just a quantitative approach to security”, which essentially means that the government wants a “lean and mean high-tech” military that has the right balance of technological and human interface components.
The PM also spoke about “digital armed forces” along with a “digital India”.
Defence minister Arun Jaitley also told the armed forces that the behaviour of Pakistan is a “global puzzle”.
