125 different birds have made tanks and water bodies their home
Coimbatore: As hundreds of birds head towards numerous water bodies in Coimbatore for this migratory season, environmental activists have urged the public to celebrate Deepavali without firing crackers to avoid causing disturbance to them. There are around 125 different varieties of birds that have made tanks and water bodies in Coimbatore their home, said N.I. Jalaluddin, president of Nature Conservation Society (NCS), in a release.
Several tanks have filled up due to the continuous rains over the last few days. Further, the Singanallur Lake, Kurichi tank, Ukkadam Valankulam, Krishnampathy tank, Muthannan Kulam, Selvasinthamani tank, Periakulam have also been receiving water from River Noyyal. With rains filling up the water bodies, different varieties of birds have also started coming here for their breeding season.
For instance, birds like greater flamingo, painted stork, cattle egret, Indian pond heron, black crowned night heron, spot billed duck, barn and owl have already arrived in large numbers. The migratory season has also been underway from September and it may extend till March.
“Hence public should abstain from firing high sound emitting crackers, which may scare away the birds. The public, living in villages abutting forest boundaries should also avoid firing crackers to help wild animals live with peace,” Mr Jalaluddin said.
