Judgment in case relating to Rs 70 lakh corruption

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Twelve officials of Kerala Water Authority and a contractor have been convicted in a corruption case.
The Inquiry Commissioner and Special Court here on Thursday delivered the judgment in a case pertaining to Rs 70 lakh corruption in the construction of intake well-cum-pump house at Mylamoodu in Kollam district as part of a World Bank-aided drinking water supply scheme during 1989-92.
While water authority engineers were sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and fine of Rs. 1.25 lakh each, the contractor was awarded two-year imprisonment and Rs. 1 lakh fine.
The first accused in the case, former chief engineer K.A. Abdhu was exempted from trial considering health problems. The others found guilty were former superintending engineers A.S. Varghese, Babu J. Punnooran, K.R. Sukumaran and M. Sabbas, former executive engineers Brrthlomew Birty, S. Manikantan Nair, K.G. Ravi and N.Viswanathan, former assistant executive engineers C.P. Deyadharan, P.C. Chacko and K. Vijayamabika, former assistant engineer G. Sundaresan and contractor Vinodlal of Kollam.
The accused allegedly entered into a criminal conspiracy and caused pecuniary loss to the tune of Rs 70 lakh to the exchequer. The case was investigated by Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau Kollam unit DySP K. Prabhakaran Nair.
