Coimbatore: Clean hands can save lives. Rubbing in this “handy” message of hygiene on the Global Hand Washing Day on Wednesday, a city school initiated a campaign to create awareness on cleansing hands with soap before and after eating.
According to Geetha Gopinath, principal of SBOA matriculation higher secondary school, it is important for the children to be educated on hygienic practices to reduce infectious diseases. Children were told to rub their hands well with soap before and after eating and wash with clean water.
“The campaign is dedicated to raising awareness of washing hands with soap as a key approach to disease prevention. Washing hands with soap can dramatically bring down sickness among children who fall sick.
Washing hands with soap can prevent about one out of three episodes of diarrhoeal illness and almost one out of six episodes of respiratory infection,” she pointed out.
This year, the theme for the GHD is ‘Clean hands save lives’. Since 2008, the first Global Hand Washing Day is being observed on October 15after the UN General Assembly marked 2008 as the International Year of Sanitation.
