Gensets are being rented out for an unbelievable price of Rs1,000 per hour
Due to increase in demand for genset prices have increased to Rs1,000 per hour as compared to just Rs1,000-2,000 for an entire day prior to the cyclone
Visakhapatnam: With severe power crisis, water supply has been hardly hit in Vizag resulting in a manifold increase in the demand for gensets in the city by residential complexes for pumping water to overhead tanks.Gensets are being rented out for an unbelievable price of Rs1,000 per hour as compared to just Rs1,000-2,000 for an entire day prior to the cyclone. Apartment owners are shelling loads of money every day to get access to water to continue daily chores. An apartment with eight houses usually takes around 3-4 hours for overhead tank to get filled costing about Rs4,000.
While gensets are available of various capacities, usually 6KVA and 20 KVA generators are rented by the apartments for the purpose. A genset owner in Akkayyapalem said, “Th-ere are about 100 genset rentals in the city of which about 30 have got more than 8 gensets and the remaining have about 2-3, of various capacities.” Barring a few almost all of them are cashing in on the opportunity of earning extra bucks out of people’s desperation and misery. I have four gensets of which I have given two for charitable trusts and the other two I am using for my personal uses.”
Another issue arising out of this is the sound pollution made by the generators disturbing those who stay in the neighbourhood of such apartments. Most of the apartments are using the generators at late night so as to have water stored for the daily chores next day.
A resident of an individual house in Balayya Sastri Layout, says, “Power failure has already made the nights sleepless and now the generators have made nights hell. The rich always have their way.”
