Samsung hopes to retain rank

Korean handset makers have virtually created smartphone market in India
New Delhi: Korean handset maker Samsung on Tuesday rejected any possibility of it losing number one position in the smartphone category in India. “Samsung has virtually created the smartphone market in India over the last few years. We have been able to do that with lot of innovation and variety in our range. So right from flagship range like Note 4 to mass smart phones of sub Rs5,000 we are a full range player and we have always been,” said Samsung India vice-president (Mobile and IT) Asim Warsi after the launch of company’s flagship Galaxy Note 4 here.
Galaxy Note 4 will be available at Rs 58,300 and is one of most expensive device in the country. In August, market research firm Counterpoint Research claimed that Micromax became the leading mobile phone supplier in India in April-June 2014. Counter-point claimed that Micromax had surpassed Samsung by capturing 17 per cent market share in terms of overall handset shipments in April-June. Samsung doesn’t agree with the report. It has seen its share coming down from 35 per cent to 29 per cent in the April-June quarter.
