Ace photographer teaches basics of art

A two-day workshop conducted by well-known photographer S. Muthukumar
Coimbatore: A two-day workshop on ‘Framing Light – The Art of Advertising and Fashion Photography’, conducted by well-known photographer S. Muthukumar commenced at Amrita school of communication here, where students from various institutions in the city are participating to gain hands-on experience in lighting, placement, setting and the use of cameras.
Starting with an introduction to photography, Mr Muthukumar took the participants through the basics of the profession.
The ace photographer, who specialises in ad films and product photography, explained how photography, once a hobby or pastime, has become an art form and career option for enthusiasts.
He has done fashion photography and worked on CSR ads for IT firms and promos for NGOs and has a wide clientele that includes Panasonic, Samsung, Parryware, Kitchen World, MRF and Hindustan UniLever.
Mr Muthukumar demonstrated how he used still shots in the film Maruthanayagam and said in response to a query from a participant that the so-called “rule of thirds” of photography could not be followed always. “Sometimes we have to go with the flow in photography. Some shots look perfect the way they are, irrespective of the rule.”
An interesting part of the workshop was that students were invited to model in designer costumes and make-up, as others tried to capture the perfect picture with lights and music in the background to create the actual atmosphere of a photo shoot.
On Sunday, the workshop will cover action photography and related matters.
