2.72 Lakh people apply for food security cards in Telangana

After weeding out bogus ration cards, the government will issue the food security cards

Karimnagar: The revenue authorities are being flooded with several thousands of applications seeking food security cards. Over 2.72 lakh applications seeking cards were received in the last two days. The authorities asked the public to submit fresh applications from October 10 following the state government’s decision to issue food security cards in place of ration cards.

According to the district authorities, a total of 2,72,033 applications were received on Friday and Saturday. Of this, 2,26,033 applications were submitted on Saturday alone. Going by this rate of submission of applications, officials expect that several lakhs of applications would be received in the next four days.

The Karimnagar revenue division saw the highest number of applications of 83,129, followed by Jagtial division which has received 70, 032. A total of 64,728 applications were received in Peddapalli division, 34,669 in Sircilla division and 19,475 in Manthani. According to the guidelines of the scheme, October 15 is the last date to submit applications.

Those possessing food security cards will get 5 kilos of rice at a very low price. After weeding out the bogus ration cards, the government will issue the food security cards. Meanwhile, 1,25,779 applications were received for issuing social security pensions to old-age persons, widows and disabled. The state government had advised the beneficiaries of various pensions as well to apply for availing the enhanced pension amount.

The TRS government has increased the amount of pension from Rs 200 to Rs 1,000 for old-aged persons and widows and from Rs 500 to Rs 1,500 for differently abled persons.
