Chennai: A 25-year-old man who came to the defence of his niece who was subjected to eve-teasing was kidnapped by a gang who murdered him and dumped his body in the gutters of Ambattur.
The murder came to light after passerby noticed foul odour emanating from the gutter and informed the police.
The man, identified as Subbu alias Tamil Mani was reported missing from his relative’s house in Thirunindravur since Wednesday.
A resident of New Anna Nagar in Pudur, near Ambattur, Tamil Mani thrashed Udayakumar (24) of Mangalapuram after he misbehaved with his teenaged niece last Monday, police investigations revealed.
“Udayakumar was admitted to the hospital with injuries following which his younger brother, Rajkumar, vowed to avenge the attack,” a police officer said. Fearing the issue escalating into a serious one, Tamil Mani’s family sent him to stay at a relative’s place at Periyar Nagar, Thirunindravur.
Rajkumar and his friends, searching for Tamil Mani, managed to track him down. They kidnapped him on Wednesday.
Police sources suspect Rajkumar and seven of his friends to have committed the murder. “While no one has been arrested so far, two associates of Udayakumar have been secured for questioning,” a police officer said.
Tamil Mani is also a local hoodlum and was booked in few assault cases, said the police. After securing the body, the police moved it to Kilpauk medical college hospital for post-mortem.
