CBI investigator A G L Kaul suffered a massive heart attack in his sleep

New Delhi: CBI investigator A G L Kaul, who probed sensational crime cases like Aarushi-Hemraj murder, Shehla Masood murder and Badaun murders, on Friday passed away following a heart attack.

54-year-old Kaul suffered a massive heart attack in his sleep and was declared brought dead by the hospital, a CBI spokesperson said here on Friday.

He is survived by his wife and two sons. Describing Kaul as an ace investigator, CBI Director Ranjit Sinha told PTI that his acumen to solve complex crime cases was impeccable. He said it is an untimely death.

Superintendent of Police, Kaul led probe in some high-profile crime cases which included the almost blind murder of RTI activist Shehla Masood and more recently the Badaun murders in which two teenage girls were found hanging from a tree.

In the controversial Aarushi-Hemraj double murder case, Kaul was brought after investigation of the first team under then Joint Director Arun Kumar was rejected by then CBI Director Ashwani Kumar.

Kaul had to file a closure report which included details of circumstantial evidence which indicated involvement of parents of the teenager -- Rajesh and Nupur Talwar.

On the basis of circumstantial evidence presented by the investigating team of Kaul, the couple was convicted of murder by the trial court and sentenced to life imprisonment.
