Celebrities too endorse music at General hospital

Project has potential to change mood in hospital

KOCHI: The Art and Medicine project, a musical programme in the general hospital, launched as part of the second edition of Kochi Biennale has gained wide support with a number of celebrities endorsing the venture. Inaugurating the 33rd edition of the art and medicine on Wednesday, film director Lal Jose focused on the healing power of music.

“A project like this has the potential to change the atmosphere in a hospital ward and this is something that could be replicated in other hospitals,” said the veteran film director.

“Even people like us turn to music to calm us down when we are stressed out”, he said. “I have seen music being used in farms and for the healthy growth of domestic animals. The same principle can be applied in the case of human beings especially when they are afflicted by illness”, he added.

Singers from the Ernakulam Y’s Men’s Club-District I took part in the programme. All persons who took part have a background in music. Ali Sadiq and C G Antony are part of various gana mela troupes in the state while Asha Ravindran, working for a software company, is learning classical music. Archana Vinod, is a student of a music degree course at Maharaja’s College.

“This is a super programme,” said Royson Antony, a class-7 student, who has his hand in a plaster cast after an accident in school. “I was here last week when singer Ms Ranjini Jose performed”, he said. During the one-hour programme, the singers entertained patients with a slew of hit songs from Malayalam films.
