Yamaha to start Tamil Nadu unit

The new plant will have a capacity to make four lakh vehicles per annum

Chennai: Japanese major Yamaha Motor India will get its '1500-crore greenfield facility near Chennai running in just about a month’s time with the first batch of its scooters expected to roll out of the factory by early 2015. With this new line, it hopes to double its two-wheeler market share to 10 per cent in next couple of years.

“Our new plant will start functioning in November and commercial production early next year. We will be rolling out scooters first from the plant,” said Asano Masaki, CEO and managing director, Yamaha Motor India Sales Pvt Ltd on the sidelines of a company function.

According to him, the new plant will have a capacity to make four lakh vehicles per annum. With this, its total two-wheeler production capacity of in India will go up to around 1.4 million per annum. Yamaha’s other plant is in Surajpur in UP.

For the current calendar year the company is targeting to sell of six lakh units in the domestic market and export around two lakh units. Queried about the excess capacity Roy Kurian vice president said, “The two wheeler industry is growing.

We are also expanding our distribution network. We will need the fresh capacity.” To address the shortage of technicians at its dealer units, the Japanese major has been training youth at its Yamaha Training Academy.
