Viral fever grips Karimnagar

30 people died in various places in last 45 days
KARIMNAGAR: As many as 30 people died of viral fever in various parts of Karimnagar district in the last 45 days and hundreds of people are reported to be suffering from the same currently.
In view of the rising incidence of fevers, the health authorities collected blood samples from 1.50 lakh public and said that only a few tested positive. Fever is a common thing during rainy season and during change of seasons, said a health supervisor. The incidence of fevers is more in the months of September and October.
Meanwhile, private hospitals are fleecing public, who are approaching them for treatment. Since the first week of September, both private and public hospitals witnessed admission of a large number of patients suffering from fevers.
From September 1 to October 5, as many as 2,000 patients got admitted to the Chalmeda Institute of Medical Sciences. Another 1,500 underwent treatment in Pratima Institute of Medical Sciences. At the same time, the Karimnagar government hospital had 70 patients admitted to it everyday.
Taking advantage of the situation, private hospitals and nursing homes have been charging heavily from the patients. Further, they are also trying to boost the business of diagnostic labs by asking patients to undergo various medical tests like platelet count, which is a very costly affair. The platelet count test costs around Rs 12,000. Many of the patients were diagnosed with remarkable deficiency in platelet count in blood.
On an average, a patient is spending nearly Rs 20,000 to get treatment for viral fever. Those who cannot afford are being forced to go to public hospitals, where there are no basic facilities.
