Malampuzha Gardens declared plastic free

Tourism authorities have imposed a fine on those violating the ban
THRISSUR: The Palakkad District Tourism Promotion Council on Monday declared the Malampuzha Gardens as a polythene and plastic-free zone. Palakkad District Collector K.Ramachandran said there would be strict ban on the use of polythene and plastic material by visitors inside the park. But they could make use of jute bags.
Tourism authorities have imposed a fine on those violating the ban. More than two dozen boards are being put up on the way to the garden to create awareness about the dangers of plastic. The boards also warn tourists against littering the area with plastic and other items. More than a100 dustbins have been placed at various points.
The insensitive use of plastic material had always been a menace at the Malampuzha tourism complex which houses a garden, a snake park, an aquarium, a rock garden, ropeway and reservoir. Plastic bottles and other waste had polluted the water in the reservoir and it was posing problems for domestic consumers.
