Hyderabad breathes a sigh of relief from pollution

Pollution levels to fall as dyeing units are shifted to Ranga Reddy district
Hyderabad: With the city extending its limits, the Telangana State government has begun to initiate measures to decongest the core city that has established industrial units, which are the main culprits for polluting lakes, land and air, affecting the life of denizens.
Over 150 electroplating units in Balanagar Industrial Area are being relocated to Automotive Industrial Park in Toopran, Medak district. The electroplating units in Balanagar were found to be releasing effluents into the Kukatpally Nala, which in turn flows into the Hussain Sagar.
Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TSIIC) chief general manager (AM) Vijay A. Deshmukh said, “An area of 25 acre at the Industrial Park in Toopran is being developed to include the entire essential infrastructure including a separate power line, water supply, treatment plant, roads and connectivity to the city.”
P. Nageshwar Rao, TSIIC, Zonal Manager, said, “Over 150 electroplating units have already applied for land in Toopran and many more are in the process of applying.” A higher official of TSIIC said, “The relocation of industries is aimed at reducing pollution and other related issues like traffic congestion, by facilitating proper infrastructure.”
Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) official said, “Several electroplating industries were issued closure notice for violating pollution control norms as they directly released effluents into the Nala.”
Similarly, the Sanathnagar industrial area, which is the hub for several small scale industries, is slowing turning into a commercial spot with the relocation of the industry. Sanathnagar industrial area houses several precision engineering work units, steel industries amongst others.
TSIIC officials said, “Over 50 per cent of industries in the Sanathnagar area have already been relocated. Samuha Engineering industries have been given over 200 acre of land in Adibatla village in Ranga Reddy district while Tata Company has been given about 50 acre.”
The relocation of industries to the city outskirts has proved to be a win-win situation for the industrialists, who are now availing the proposed land area with essential infrastructure for their units at a much cheaper cost, while their existing land in the middle of the city is being turned into commercial establishments.
The Sanathnagar Industrial area, from where over 50 percent industries have been relocated, is now home to many automobile showrooms of reputed companies. Several commercial complexes too have come up in the area. In its bid to promote industrialization, the state government established Sanathnagar industrial park in 1956 for several small scale industrialists.
“The land was given out at Rs 1500 per square yard. The present cost of the land is stands at Rs 35,000-40,000 per sq. yard. Hence, most of the industrialists are coming up with commercial establishments or running their own offices,” said a higher official of TSIIC.
The case is similar in Balanagar Industrial area. The land allotted at Toopran and other industrial areas used to cost between Rs 2,500-3,500 per sq. metre. However, TSIIC authorities have not permitted residential spaces in these areas. TSIIC Chief General Manager (AM) Vijay A. Deshmukh said, “Presently, the residential spaces are not allowed in the areas, as the parks were designed for commercial establishments.
