Tour operators take Clean India campaign forward

IATO takes up cleaning of hotels and monuments to display solidarity with the government
Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachch Bharat Abhiyan initiative seems to be catching up with the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), too, with the organisation taking up cleaning of hotels and monuments to display solidarity with the government.
According to IATO president Subhash Goyal, for the industry to succeed, it requires political will at the highest level.
“It also needs a clean destination. The Prime Minister’s call to create a ‘Clean India of Gandhiji’s dream’ is also our objective and IATO has taken this on mission mode,” he says.
The Union tourism ministry had directed the ITDC and all travel associations to organise a Clean India programme on October 2 this year in their respective organisations. Both the IATO and ITDC have, in principle, decided to jointly undertake the Clean India programme in different parts of the country.
It may be recalled, IATO, which has been focusing on a clean environment, took upon itself the task of cleaning toilets at the world heritage monuments of Qutb complex, Humayun’s tomb, and Red Fort with the support of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
The tourism sector requires the least amount of investment but fetches the highest returns in the shortest span.
“But a clean image will go a long way in attracting more tourists to the country,” a senior tourism official said.
