Slum-dwellers to get houses in same area

CM starts 2-bedroom scheme for poor

Hyderabad: Slum-dwellers in Hyderabad will get new houses in their respective slums and they will not be evicted. As part of slum-free Hyderabad campaign, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has asked the GHMC to expedite slum clearance and construction of new multi-storied buildings and houses in their place. “I will convene a meeting of elected representatives in the city in 10 days to take a collective decision on construction of houses in the identified slums. Slum-dwellers will get houses in existing slums,” the Chief Minister said.

The Chief Minister set the foundation stone for construction of 396 flats at IDH colony in Bhoiguda, Secunderabad, and four adjacent colonies on Dasara. He was accompanied by excise minister T. Padma Rao, Sanathnagar MLA Talasani Srinivas Yadav and others.

Taking a dig at previous governments for constructing ‘dabba-like’ (box-like) houses where families were crammed in one room, he assured new flats, to be completed in six months, would be spacious and the surroun-dings would be clean.

“Can an MLA and MP live in such congested houses? Poor should live with dignity. We need Rs 10,000 crore for the housing scheme and it will be linked to a Central scheme. I spoke to Mr Venkaiah Naidu and he promised all support in the state initiative,” he said.

IDH colony in Secun-derabad is the first initiative of the TRS government where two-bed room flats, costing about Rs 8 lakh each, are taken up as part of its electoral promise. “IDH colony will be a model colony with a flat of 520 sq ft costing around Rs 7.90 lakh, and it is one of its kind. Earlier constructions were taken up only to the extent of 360 sq ft,” he said. On a request from a Dalit family, the Chief Minister ordered allotment of a new flat to them in the colony. Mr Rao also visited slums near Sanjeevaiah Park. near Necklace Road.
