Chennai: The DMK on Friday petitioned Governor K. Rosaiah to take steps to ensure law and order in the state. Party organising secretary R.S. Bharathi in a memorandum alleged that the AIADMK members, including ministers, had been indulging in “unlawful” agitations ever since the Bengaluru special court convicted Jayalalithaa in the disproportionate assets case. The police watched as mute spectators, Bharathi claimed, adding that some DMK party offices had come under attack by the ruling party persons.
Mr Bharathi said the AIADMK-led local bodies were violating the Constitution by passing resolutions criticising the Bengaluru judge “in derogatory terms and attributing ill motives against him”. “They are not supposed to act against the sprit of the Constitution, against another constitutional organ, namely judiciary,” he said requesting the Governor to intervene and prevent such violations.
“We requested the Governor to exercise his constitutional authority to enforce law and order in Tamil Nadu. We also took along with us the DMK councilors injured in the AIADMK attack. We also gave details of government properties damaged,” Bharathi told reporters after his 15-minute meeting with Rosaiah.
DMK leader in Chennai Corporation, T. Subash Chandra Bose, who also accompanied Bharathi, carried another petition detailing the “unprecedented pre-planned brutal” attack on him and fellow party councilors in the council meeting on Tuesday. He said the AIADMK councilors beat up the DMK members when they objected to their leader Karunanidhi being abused by them in filthy language at the recent council meeting.
