Mahatma Gandhiji’s statue is talk of town

Mruthyunjayudu kept the statue in the room meant for offering puja and worshipped it

Rajahmundry: A small statue of Gandhi that was mortgaged by a needy person with a Gandhian Penjarla Mruthyunjayudu over 50 years ago in Rajahmundry, is now the talk of the town.

Penjarla Mruthyunjayudu a harmonium exponent, was a follower of Gandhi.

When a man approached him with a statue of Gandhi made of cement and iron to mortgage it for some money, he accepted the offer.

Mruthyunjayudu kept the statue in the room meant for offering puja and worshipped it. Over time, the man who took money failed to return and take back the statue.

Mruthyunjayudu informed his wife Satyavathi about the development later. The couple adopted a son Kankatala Srinivas. After Mruthyunjayudu passed away, his wife and son rebuilt the house and installed the statue on the parapet of the top floor of the building.

Students visit the house on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti every year and pay tributes to Gandhiji.
