Coimbatore: Condemning the violence that broke out following the conviction of Jayalalithaa in the disproportionate assets case, Union minister of state for heavy industries Pon Radhakrishnan, however, said that the situation in Tamil Nadu did not warrant imposition of President’s rule.
“The situation doesn’t warrant invoking Article 356 and imposing President’s rule,” he said while replying to a mediaperson’s query. He was here to attend a function to disburse enhanced pension amount at SNR Auditorium in Avarampalayam on Tuesday.
“President’s rule can’t be sought because of the unruly incidents that happened in Tamil Nadu. The current situation also doesn’t warrant such a rule. However, the violence could have been curbed and averted. The police should have kept the law and order situation under control. I hope that the newly elected Chief Minister O. Paneerselvam will ensure the safety of people in the state,” he said.
Further, Mr Pon Radhakrishnan said that police should stop acting in favour of the state government. “Party men may have love and affection for their leaders, but it should not affect the normal public,” he said. Stating that BJP will gain a strong foothold in Tamil Nadu, Mr Pon Radhakrishnan also said that a solution would be found to the problems faced by fishermen in the state from the Sri Lankan navy when they go fishing.
Earlier, speaking at the function, the Union minister said that the Central government will extend all its support for the development of industries and industrialists. “For the welfare of senior citizens, the minimum pension amount has been increased to Rs 1,000 per month. This will benefit around 32 lakh pensioners, who get a minimum pension amount,” the minister pointed out.
