Mehrab Irani come up with a new book on managing money

Hyderabad: Managing money is a thought that scares most people. But after 15 years of working in the world of finance and investment, Mehrab Irani was in an ideal position to present the subject in an engaging way to readers. He’s attempted to do just that with his new book Mad Money Journey. Excerpts from an interview:
Tell us about the genesis of Mad Money Journey, and what inspired the story.
In the good old days there used to be barter system, goods and services used to be exchanged for goods and services. Then man created money as a medium of exchange and store of value. However, over a period of time, the creator himself became a slave of his own creation wage slave of the employer, tax slave of the government and loan slave of the bank. In this physical world, money is the single most important factor which comes between man and his dreams. I wanted to reintroduce people to their dreams and remove this hindrance between them and their dreams.
Mad Money Journey has been described as exploring the relationship between an average Joe and money. Would you say it’s a ‘finance thriller’?
Yes, certainly. The two most important things in this world are entertainment and money. I thought why not combine the two? So, I thought to present money in a thrilling, suspenseful, entertaining form. We all like to learn from stories and fables because we have been taught that since our childhood. So, why not learn the most important subject also in the form of a fable?
Apart from understanding money and big finance, how else have your years in the corporate world helped you with this book?
I have been working in the finance field for the past 15 years. When I used to meet people in seminars and conferences, I realised that there is a lot of apathy towards financial thinking. And it is not our fault during school or college, we are taught subjects like science, math and geography, but nobody teaches us anything about dealing with money. My work in the corporate world convinced me of the real need to explain the relationship between man and money, thereby aiding in developing and shaping my thoughts as a writer.
