Foreigners adore Mysore, students join Heritage walk held as part of Dasara fest

Heritage walk began at 7 am from Town hall & covered at least 12 heritage structures

Mysore: Chisomo Mwanamvekha, a foreign student from Blantyre, Malawi, studying at Teresian college was impressed by the fact that the key of the building which houses the Central Food Research Institute in Mysore was handed over to former PM Jawaharlal Nehru in 1962 by then Mysore Maharaja Chamaraja Wadiyar for just Rs 1. The building was earlier a Palace, which belonged to the Royal family and was in fact gifted to the third daughter of Chamaraja Wadiyar.

Chisoma and 30 other foreign students studying in Mysore and a few elected representatives took a stroll to visit some of the heritage buildings in their neighbourhood on Monday. They wanted to know about 201 heritage buildings which are awaiting the heritage tag, from Mysore heritage expert committee members and the Commissioner of Department of Archaeology, Dr Betsurmath during the Heritage walk.

Chisoma said, “It is wonderful to participate in events like this. It is important to get to know India, especially Karnataka, and Mysore. It is vital to know about heritage buildings, since they play a big part in Mysore’s history.” The heritage walk began at 7am from Town hall and covered at least 12 heritage structures. It passed along Silver Jubilee clock tower, Chamaraja Circle and Mysore Palace and ended at Chamarajendra Technical Institute.
