Coimbatore: Thousands of AIADMK members gagged themselves with black cloth and staged a hunger strike in Coimbatore on Monday, demanding the release of their party leader and former chief minister J. Jayalalithaa from prison.
Around 15 AIADMK men, mostly autorickshaw drivers from the AIADMK's labour wing, tonsured their heads. "I am an AIADMK worker for more than 30 years. We have shaved off our heads for the release of Amma from the jail," said 43-year-old C. Ravi, an office assistant at the AIADMK party office, Idhaya Deivam Maaligai, on Huzur road.
AIADMK women councillors were seen wailing during the protest. The hunger strike in front of Tamil Nadu hotel in Gandhipuram in Coimbatore on Monday was led by Coimbatore mayor P. Rajkumar and deputy mayor Leelavathi Unni. Former mayor S.M. Velusamy was also present.
Vehicular traffic came to a halt at the busy Gandhipuram junction as vehicles were parked haphazardly all along Nanjappa road. Wailing AIADMK women and emotionally charged partymen raised slogans condemning the judgment by the special court.
