Business as usual on Sunday in Chennai

The city roads wore a deserted look on Saturday evening

Chennai: Business was as usual in the state on Sunday with shops opening and buses running to full capacity. On Saturday, most people remained indoors and commercial establishments were forced to down shutters after a special court in Bengaluru convicted AIAMDK chief J. Jayalalithaa in connection with a disproportionate assets case.

“Buses are running normally today. Despite it being a Sunday, a good number of shops were operating normally. Except a bus burning incident in Virudhunagar district, there were no other major untoward incidents,” a senior state police official told this newspaper on Sunday.

“Actually the violent reaction by the AIADMK cadres to the verdict was controlled by late Saturday evening. The party workers were trying to block roads and forced shops to close on Saturday afternoon. The police kept a vigil throughout the night to make sure no untoward incident took place,” the official added.

A councillor of Kancheepuram municipality on Sunday surrendered in connection with the case of burning a government bus on Saturday afternoon. “Parimalam, a councillor surrendered at the police station. We are trying to find out details of others involved in the incident,” the police said.

In Chennai, normalcy returned on Sunday morning. The city roads wore a deserted look on Saturday evening. However, the shops, which were closed since Saturday afternoon after the special court pronounced the verdict, started functioning normally since Sunday morning. Most of the senior city police officers, including city commissioner S. George, were personally present at their offices and also on the roads throughout the night monitoring the city.
