Liquor sellers want prohibition

Employees of the Tasmac liquor shops want total prohibition in the state
Chennai: Believe it or not, employees of the Tasmac liquor shops want total prohibition in the state. Their union has moved the Madras high court seeking direction to the police to grant its members permission to hold a protest-fast on October 2, the birth anniversary Mahatma Gandhi.
When the matter came up before Justice V. Ramasubramanian, additional government pleader P. Sanjai Gandhi submitted that public protests were not usually permitted on Gandhi Jayanti. The counsel said meetings could be held for prayers and for hailing Gandhiji’s ideals, but not protest agitations. The judge then wondered, in a lighter vein, if the state did not wish to follow Gandhi’s ideals.
When the government counsel next suggested that the union could hold its protest on any other day, the judge asked if, in that case, Tasmac would be willing to grant the striking workers a paid holiday for holding their strike. The judged posted the case to Thursday to enable the counsel to get instructions from the government.
When asked if seeking total prohibition would not hit their livelihood, union general secretary D. Dhanasekaran told DC, “If the government closes down the liquor shops, we will be accommodated in other departments. Our livelihood will remain protected. In fact, we will get better jobs than working in these liquor shops”.
