University of Hyderabad professor wins essay award

Linguistics professor Panchanan Mohanty was recently felicitated by a one of the oldest literary institutions in the country
Hyderabad: Professor Panchanan Mohanty, faculty at the Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies (CALTS) at the University of Hyderabad (UOH), was recently awarded the Pandit Gopinath Nanda Essay and Criticism Award, 2014. He was felicitated by the Utkal Sahitya Samaj in Cuttack, one of the oldest literary institutions in the country.
Prof. Mohanty, who is currently in Washington for a workshop on culture and language revitalisation, says, “The essay for which I was given the award discusses different aspects of the Odiya language.” He is also the Coordinator for Centre for Endangered Languages and Mother Tongue Studies at UOH.
“I think as a subject, Linguistics is often misunderstood because people associate it with studying literature. Linguistics delves into the scientific study of languages. And once one knows the theories of linguistics, it’s not difficult picking up any language either,” adds Prof. Mohanty, who had earlier been the president of the Dravidian Linguistics Association in Thiruvananthapuram.
