Laptop freebies boost sale of personal computers

In 2014, Tamil Nadu accounted for 22.6 per cent of overall PC purchases in the country
Chennai: The state government’s promise in its poll manifesto of providing free laptops to students has boosted the personal computer (PC) market across the country.
The government’s purchases for the scheme has resulted in an overall rebound in PC sales, with Tamil Nadu the top buyer in the last three months.
During the second quarter of 2014, Tamil Nadu alone accounted for 22.6 per cent of overall PC purchases in the country, followed by Maharashtra, Delhi, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Overall, PC sales rebounded to 2.55 million units, up 25.6 per cent compared to 2.03 units in the year-ago period during the second quarter of the fiscal, according to a study by the International Data Corporation.
The combined PC spending of the top five states accounted for 62.3 per cent computer sales during the second quarter. The spike in Tamil Nadu is entirely due to fast deals from Elcot to tech vendors, such as HP, Dell and Lenovo, to support the state’s electoral schemes, said technology researchers.
Karnataka and Tamil Nadu remain the two dominant states in the southern region, with a combined share of 53.1 per cent in the consumer PC market during the period.
While Tamil Nadu had earmarked a sum of '1,100 crore in its budget to disburse free laptops to 5.5 lakh students this fiscal, Karnataka also plans to spend '4 crore on free laptops to visually impaired students in the state.
Coupled with the onset of the festive season, computer sales are expected to pick up further during the next six months. “Our ConsumerScape surveys suggest that end-user spending is back on PCs as 66 per cent of the respondents desire a PC as their next item of purchase against devices like smart phones and tablets,” said Kanwar Rahul, senior research manager, Channels Research, IDC.
Given the low penetration levels of computers in the country, this research suggests there is still a huge opportunity in the Indian PC business waiting to be tapped by the tech vendors in the country, he added.
