Water enters Sagar Left Bank Canal

60mw generation of electricity halted
Hyderabad: In yet another mishap, Nagarjunasagar water entered into Left Bank Power House on Thursday evening, inundating the two hydel power units that produces 60 MW. Authorities were forced to stop releases into Left Bank Main Canal.
Reports from Nagarjuna Sagar dam indicates primarily it was the negligence of the Telangana Genco staff working at the two hydel houses in preventing leakages from the rubber seals of the gates which regulate water flow from the reservoir to the units. In fact, Genco took up mandatory overhauling of one of the power units for the last three days.
However, due to leakage of water through the rubber seals of the gates, water entered both the units, resulting in tripping of the second unit. The gushing waters not only inundated the first unit under overhauling but also washed away the machinery into the Left Bank Main canal that serves Nalgonda and Khammam district irrigation needs. Genco officials immediately swung into action and stopped releases to the canal.
This is the third such mishap in recent days that occurred in Telangana due to heavy floods in the river Krishna . First it was water released from Jurala project that entered into second phase of lower power units and second, the pump house of Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation project in Mahbubnagar district was inundated due to Srisailam backwaters.
A high level enquiry was already ordered into the two incidents. Simultaneously repair work like pumping the water was already going on. This is the third such incident where NS dam waters entered the Left Bank Power House. “We have not estimated the loss at this stage. It will take time, first we have to take up repairs,” said T Genco official.
