Nellore: Gaiety and devotional fervour marked the first day of the Venkatagiri Jatara on Wednesday. Thousands of devotees turned up for the annual even from various parts of Andhra Pradesh and the neighbouring states. Puja was offered to the idol of the deity Poleramma prepared with clay in a house considered as her parent’s home at Kummari Street on Wednesday evening.
Venkatagiri legislator Kurugondla Ramakrishna was the first worship the goddess. Devotees beelined before the house to offer prayers to the goddess. Organisers said that the idol will be taken in a procession to a house, which is considered as the mother-in-law’s house of the deity, at Jeenigalavari Street after 11 pm on Wednesday. They said that the deity will be taken in a procession to the temple around 3 am on Thursday.
