It is the ‘queen of silks’ for this Deepavali from state-owned Co-optex
Coimbatore: It is the ‘queen of silks’ for this Deepavali from state-owned Co-optex. The deft weavers from the Sirumugai cooperative society have crafted a dazzling array of regal ‘Maharani’ collections for Deepavali.
The silk attire of the royal families of Mysore in Karnataka to Sattur in Virudhunagar have been recreated to unveil the special ‘Maharani’ collections for the festival of colours and light.
Twenty five weavers of the Sirumugai Society who had woven saint-poet Thiruvalluvar’s verses in silk have now created the ‘Maharani’ collections.
“Co-optex has introduced a wide range of sarees for this festive season. The designs have been chosen after a research that was done on the sarees of the royal families in Mysore, Sattur and Pudukottai,” said Mr T.N. Venkatesh, managing director of Co-optex.
Last year, Co-optex outlets recorded sales of Rs 121 crore and the state agency has set a sales target of Rs 182 crore this year. This includes Rs 24 crore sales this year in Coimbatore region alone.
Co-optex plans to focus on educational institutions and government employees by organising special sales in the institutions for three or four days. As many as six Co-optex outlets in the state will get a new look before Pongal and there will new designs as well.
There are over 70 outlets outside the state (Bengaluru, Vijayawada and Mumbai region) and Co-optex plans to focus more on these cities by introducing traditional Tamil Nadu designs. Products with state-specific motifs will be launched and special seasonal sales will be organised in other states, said Mr Venkatesh. For instance, there could be special sales in Kerala during the Sabarimala season between November and January.
