Bengaluru Development Authority board approves elevated corridor at Rs 1,100 crore

The Chalukya signal will have four layers of flyover to make the circle signal-free

BENGALURU: The ambitious elevated road from Chalukya Circle to Hebbal flyover with a six-lane corridor at a cost of Rs. 1,100 crore, has been approved by the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) board meeting recently.

The project helps beat traffic congestion on busy Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) Road.

Plans are under way to construct the multi-layered and six-lane signal-free elevated corridor up to Hebbal. Already, project consultant STUP has prepared the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and it has been sent to the state government for approval. The project cost is likely to be borne by the BDA with some help from Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), said BDA commissioner T. Sham Bhat.

The Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is keen on going ahead with the project and has extended all possible support from the government.

The Chalukya signal will have four layers of flyover to make the circle signal-free. One layer will be the underpass and there will be three layers above.

Since the road is located within city limits, it cannot be made a toll road, he said.

The project is estimated to be completed three years. Although BDA has agreed to fund the project it is looking for JNNURM funding.

The BDA has done a physical survey of properties to be acquired. Since it is an elevated road, the BDA is planning minimal acquisition, Mr. Bhat added.

Most of the properties along the corridor belong to both state and central government.

The private properties along the corridor are few in number. The private property owners will be persuaded to accept Transferable Development Rights (TDR). Since the area falls under BBMP jurisdiction, TDR will be issued through the BBMP. If the property owners do not agree to TDR, monetary compensation would have to be given, he added.

Already, the government has constructed a toll road from Hebbal and beyond Kempegowda International Airport Limited (KIAL).
