Barred colleges sit on fee, papers

Owner quota students face big trouble
Hyderabad: Students who took admissions in the 174 disqualified engineering colleges are now making the rounds of government offices as the managements are refusing to refund the students’ fee and to return their certificates.
Many of the 174 engineering colleges had ‘sold’ the management quota seats to students but were later denied approvals by the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad prior to the commencement of Eamcet counselling.
It is an open secret that many colleges sell management quota seats at high prices to students before actually being notified by the government for admissions. Subsequent to being disqualified by the JNTU, the colleges were barred from admitting students through Eamcet counselling or the management quota route in their colleges.
However, after the Hyderabad High Court asked the JNTU to give the colleges approvals, the university has not yet complied.
Students who had taken admissions in these colleges have now obtained seats in other colleges. “I had paid Rs 1 lakh to the college before the counselling but then I heard it was not given approval by the JNTU. I don’t want to study there but they are not giving back my money which I need to pay the fee in the college where I have got admission,” said a student on condition of anonymity.
The government is receiving similar complaints from many students. The colleges had anticipated that they would be included in the second phase of Eamcet counselling but the Supreme Court ruling came as a jolt.
Prof. T. Papi Reddy, chairman, Telangana State Council of Higher Education, told this newspaper: “We are receiving complaints. I think it is wrong to hold back fee or certificates after the latest Supreme Court judgement. Before that they thought they would be included in second phase counselling.”
