Councillor suspected of providing ‘illegal’ water connections

The councillor had given illegal connections collecting Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 from the locals.

Chennai: Residents of Nethaji Nagar, in Pallavaram municipality, were shocked to see their water pipeline connections getting disconnected by the municipality. The pipeline connections were identified as illegal by the municipality though it was given by local ward councillor Vairam Srinivasan.

The residents were informed that the councillor had given illegal connections collecting money from the public and without informing the municipality about the connections.

The area, which falls under ward 21 of Pallavaram municipality, was given pipeline connections on demand from the locals by the ward councillor. Councillor Srinivasan had privately laid the pipelines without the knowledge of the municipality collecting Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 from the locals.

On Sunday, a group of 11 residents filed a complaint with the Chitlapakkam police station against the errant councillor. The police filed an FIR on the complaint received from Vijayakumar (32), a resident from whom the councillor had collected Rs 13,000

The residents demanded that the municipality taken action against the councillor for providing illegal connections.
