Independent candidate skates for votes

Chathrapathiy’s priority is to make city green, clean
Coimbatore: An independent candidate for the mayoral elections here has been going around the city skating to seek votes for the ensuing polls. Chathrapathiy, 48, a yoga tutor from Kovaipudur, has also been doing stunning acrobatic stunts while skating to grab people’s attention. “I chose to campaign with a difference to make people take notice of me as I could not spend money the way my rivals were doing to seek votes,” he said.
Confident of a win, Chathrapathiy said, “I am facing the election with optimism despite the tough challenge from political heavyweights. I met up to 10,000 people, who are also responding positively to my call for support. I start my campaign around 7 am and carry on till night, barring a few hours of rest in the afternoon.”
Besides talking to the people, he also distributes pamphlets, explaining his objectives and poll promises. “My priority is to make the city green and clean. The city’s green cover is already dwindling and even forests are becoming barren due to fast and phased urbanisation. I will also strive to end corruption and bring about better governance,” he said. A few days ago, Chathrapathiy began his campaign by ‘hand walking’ on the steps of the Marudamalai hills. In the coming days, he plans to stand upside down at Town Hall, Oppanakkara street, and other crowded areas. A postgraduate in philosophy, Chathrapathiy’s symbol is two swords.
