Part of Daspalla Hills becomes dump yard

At one point along this stretch of the road also exists a huge pile of plastic bottles

Visakhapatnam: A beautiful uphill road in one of the most posh localities of the city, Daspalla Hills, has been turned into a stinking dump yard. From construction debris to remnants from chicken shops, carcasses of dead animals and plastic waste, everything is being dum-ped on this stretch of road from Government Circuit House to Nowroji Road.

At one point along this stretch of the road also exists a huge pile of plastic bottles. If one enters the bushes and wanders inside, a couple of people can be seen weighing and dealing in those bottles.

The Greater Visakhapat-nam Municipal Corpora-tion officials seem to be fine with this conduction of plastic business as one of the persons working at the scrap dealing shop said that they have been conducting business here since a few years and buy a minimum of 10-15 kgs of plastic bottles every day.

He further said, “The plastic bottles are lying here just because the market rate is not good. As we haven’t sold them since a while the load has been piling up, otherwise the place usually stays clean. It is not we who are making this place messy. It is the people who come at night and dump all sorts of garbage here around 2-3 am.”

He further added that when he tried to stop them from dumping waste, he was beaten up by them. Such is the scenario in a posh locality.

When contacted, senior GVMC officials, all they had to say was that they have discussed the issue along with approaching police and measures will be taken for clearing the issue.
GVMC, chief city planner, D. Venkataratnam said, “There needs to be deployment of some sort of security personnel at the road as people come at late nights and dump the waste.”
