Shiela Dikshit backs BJP government formation claims in Delhi

Delhi Congress distanced itself from Dikshit's 'shocking' statement

New Delhi: Differences between former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit and the current leadership of the Congress’ Delhi unit came out into the open Thursday as the former CM appeared to back the BJP’s efforts to form a government in Delhi.

“In a democracy, an elected government is always better because it is representative of the people. If the BJP is in a position to form the government, then it’s good,” Ms Diskhit said.

Congress leaders were taken by surprise at the remarks by its three-time former CM, and said it was “shocked”. Distancing the party from her remarks, Delhi Congress chief spokesman Mukesh Sharma said: “We are very clear we want elections in the city, and will try our level best to stop the BJP from government formation. Ms Dikshit is a senior leader, and it’s her personal opinion.”

Congress sources hinted that leaders like Ajay Maken and Arvinder Singh Lovely were “covertly” trying to keep Ms Dikshit out of Delhi politics. Others sources, however, claimed she had the “backing and blessings” of the Congress high command.
