FIR registration to be centralised: City Police Commissioner, M.N. Reddi

This is to separate the registration of cases and investigations as the short-staffed police are under heavy work pressure

Bengaluru: The city police has proposed to set up First Information Report (FIR) registration centres across the city, which would aim to redress the grievances of the general public and also lessen the burden of police, who often shy away from filing cases, City Police Commissioner, M.N. Reddi said here on Thursday.

Replying to a question about the police officers reluctance to register complaints from general public citing jurisdictional problems, Mr Reddi said the proposed centralized kiosks, which would be set up across the city to register complaints independently and dispatch them to the concerned police station for further action.

This is to separate the registration of cases and investigations as the short-staffed police are under heavy work pressure. This is one of the reasons why they often are reluctant to register a complaint, he said. Citing an example of Whitefield police station, Mr Reddi said that during his recent visit he found that there were 59 police personnel to cater to over three lakh population in the area. This shows the work load and pressure they are undergoing, he said.

"I have come across many instances where resistance is more among the police officers to register a case. As per the rules, a police officer should register a case irrespective of the jurisdiction and transfer the case to the concerned police station.

We are trying to make every police station people friendly where the police could redress the grievances patiently in order to improve police-public relationship. However, due to various reasons, this is not being achieved. Hopefully with the setting up of the FIR centres across the city, the problems of the police pertaining to that at least is taken care of," Mr Reddi said.

A group of youth attacked the boy and brutally beat him up when he was found sitting with the girl in a cyber cafe in Kelkarbag Wednesday night. He was rushed to the Belgaum civil hospital where a large number of people from his community gathered through the night. As news of the attack spread , mobs from both communities began to throw stones
