Karnataka Congress meet to tackle core issues

Local body polls, flood situation and appointment of chairpersons to figure at meeting

Bengaluru: In an effort to gain a head start over Opposition parties in the run up to polls to various local bodies and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), office bearers Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) will put their heads together and strategize for these elections at a meeting here on Thursday.

A senior leader told Deccan Chronicle the office bearers and presidents of all district units would discuss strategies to enthuse party workers ahead of these crucial polls and on stepping up the momentum of the membership drive before the end of the year. Besides, they would also short-list names of loyal workers for appointment of chairpersons of various state-owned boards and corporations.

“The pressure from various leaders is growing every day. The party cannot afford to delay the selection of party workers to head boards and corporations in the state,” the leader said adding that the party has estimated that no less than 2,000 posts exist in 175 Taluk Panchayat Development Boards as well as 113 run boards and corporations.

The leader said the office bearers would also discuss on issues like the impact of floods in some districts. “We need to tackle this at the grassroots from Opposition’s point of view. As Opposition parties will be engaged in spreading rumours about the state government’s failure to provide relief to victims of floods, workers at the grassroots level must step in to prevent erosion of the party’s vote base ahead of forthcoming polls to various local bodies,” the leader added.

The leader said the state unit must focus on the membership drive and ensure its completion by December.
