Hyderabad: Telangana state government is undecided over conduct of the second phase of counselling with officials having varied opinions a day before the government is to file an affidavit in the Supreme Court. Though TS government had asked for time till Friday to file its opinion, the apex court ordered it to do so on Thursday.
While the Telangana State Council of Higher Education chairman Prof T. Papi Reddy has said on record that the government is against conducting second phase of counselling, Telangana education minister G. Jagadishwar Reddy is said to be in favour of it.
But Eamcet co-convenor and TS commissioner of Technical Education had also written to the APSCHE that second phase of counselling should not be held. Prof. Papi Reddy had said that the Telangana government is against second phase of counselling since the earlier SC had categorically mandated the two states to complete the admission process by August 31.
However, Mr Reddy is said to be for the second phase counselling since it is in students’ interest and also because it does not allow colleges the leeway to falsely show filled seats.
At the same time, Technical education commissioner Shailaja Ramaiyer had written to the APSCHE saying the second phase counselling should not be held.
“If Telangana government is for second phase of counselling, why did they write to us saying they are against it? Their final stand will be clear on Thursday,” a senior APSCHE official said.
However, as reported in these columns, management quota seats would go waste if no further admissions are allowed. When asked about the government’s stand, officials shrug off the matter and say it will be clear soon. The SC also declined the government’s request till Friday to file the counter affidavit.
Supreme court to hear Andhra Pradesh plea on phase II of counselling:
The Supreme Court on Wednesday declared that it will hear the plea of the AP Higher Educational Council seeking permission from it to conduct the second phase of counselling for Eamcet admissions on Thursday.
The Higher Educational Council moved an application before the apex court submitting that the first round of counselling has been closed on August 31, as per the SC’s direction.
The council submitted that there were hundreds of seats left vacant and urged the court to grant permission for the second phase if counselling. The counsel representing Telangana State government sought time to get instructions from the state government.
