THANJAVUR: Two children found abandoned on the premises of St Peter’s church here on Wednesday were rescued by Childline officials and admitted to the government hospital in Kumbakonam to join the cradle baby scheme.
Soon after prayers were over at St Peter’s church at Maharnonbu Chaavadi in Thanjavur on Wednesday morning, the devotees left for their houses. A three-year-old girl and a four month old baby girl were found abandoned on the church premises. The two children were crying in hunger. The church staff plied them with biscuits and milk.
On being informed by the church authorities, sub inspector Priya of Thanjavur East police station and Childline project coordinator Pathimaraj rushed to the spot. They rescued the children and took them to the Raja Mirasdar government hospital in Thanjavur. Later, the two children were taken to the government hospital in Kumbakonam to be admitted under the cradle baby scheme, sources said.
It is not known who abandoned the two children, but it is suspected that as they are female children, they were abandoned due to societal presssure. We will wait for two more days. If no one comes forward to stake claim to these children, they will then be admitted under the cradle baby scheme, the hospital authorities said.
