94 lakh aspirants wait for govt jobs

48.32 lakh among them are women

Chennai: As many as 94.58 lakh people from Tamil Nadu are still waiting for government jobs. Statistics provided by the employment exchange reveals that of the 94 lakh aspirants, 48.32 lakh are women.

As per the statistics, 5,48,417 science graduates, 3,76,719 graduate teachers and 1,81,233 engineers remain in the employment exchange list waiting for government jobs. MBBS and BDS candidates too form a bulk of those who aspire to join government services.

Commenting on the trend, former Anna University vice-chancellor and ex-member of the State Planning Commission says that it was the slowdown in economy and lack of job creation in the manufacturing sector that led to this situation.

“In the past it used to be the manufacturing sector that would provide job opportunities to a larger section of the population after which the IT services sector replicated it. The state government should take steps to revive the manufacturing sector and its ancillary industries to provide jobs to the skilled workforce in the state,” he said. Terming the statistics as indisputable, Prof Balagurusamy points out that construction firms, which employ a large number of people employ workers from other states rather than from Tamil Nadu.

“I had registered in the employment exchange a long time ago and had been waiting in anticipation of a government job since then. I am now optimistic that the present state government will create more jobs with Chief Minister’s vision 2023 and huge investments flowing into the state,” Shanthi, a resident of Kancheepuram said. An official in the employment exchange, who did not wish to be named, said that they conduct training programmes on a regular basis to make candidates industry ready, besides organising job fairs involving private companies to recruit candidates from the employment exchange.
