Jayalalithaa sues Subramanian Swamy for defamation

Swamy commented on TN fishermen boat issue

Chennai: Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Monday filed a defamation case against BJP leader Subramanian Swamy in a city court in Chennai for making malicious remarks against her. The CM has also filed a defamation case against editor and publisher of a Tamil daily for publishing the remarks in the daily on September 4.

On behalf of Jayalalithaa, city public prosecutor M.L. Jegan filed the defamation case against Swamy in the principal sessions judge court. Jegan contended that Swamy, in his letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, made certain remarks in connection with the boats seized by personnel of the Sri Lankan navy in the high seas. Swamy also made serious allegations against the CM. The remarks were published in the daily on September 4. Jegan stated that the article was “malicious, defamatory and intended to harm the reputation of the Chief Minister”.

He said, “The Chief Minister is held in high esteem by all sections of people and she has been overwhelmingly voted as the CM and enjoys high reputation among the people.”

The article deliberately cast aspersions on the Chief Minister. There was no justification for publishing the news item.

Hence, Jegan sought the court to take cognisance of the complaint to proceed against Swamy and the Tamil daily under relevant sections of the IPC.
